Working with Birmingham

Birmingham businesses are the gap between heritage trades and the new creative scene.

Birmingham's an interesting design city right now — the Jewellery Quarter's heritage trades sit a mile from Digbeth's creative scene, and most of the city's small bold brands need work that bridges both worlds without flattening either.

1

Independents in the JQ and Digbeth

The Jewellery Quarter is full of small independent makers and the Digbeth creative quarter is full of design-minded businesses — both need work that's confident at small scale and quietly distinctive.

2

The southern-arc food scene

Moseley, Kings Heath and Stirchley have more interesting independent food and drink briefs per square mile than most of the city centre — coffee, bread, beer, small plates, and the brands that hold them together.

3

Property and professional firms in the centre

The Colmore Row and Edmund Street professional cluster — law, finance, property — needs work that's quietly confident, not loud. Identity that holds up in a planning hearing or a partner-level pitch.

How a project runs across 25 miles.

Most of the work happens over video — same as it does for our clients in London, Bristol or Milan. But for Birmingham briefs there are four moments where we'll always come to you in person, included in the quote at no mark-up.

1Kickoff

We come to you

A 90-minute discovery session at your office, café, studio or building site — wherever the work actually lives.

In Birmingham
2Direction

Two routes, over video

Two design directions presented and worked through over Zoom or Meet — usually 60–90 minutes, recorded and shared.

3Develop

Refinement & reviews

Designs refined and shared async via Figma and PDFs. Two scheduled review calls; ad-hoc questions handled within the working day.

4Deliver

Press-check or handover

We attend the press-check for print and packaging work, or run a handover session at your office for digital projects — at no charge for Birmingham-area suppliers.

In Birmingham
We'd talked to two Birmingham agencies and a London one before someone at the Jewellery Quarter coworking sent us to Nicolas. The 25-mile drive made him feel further away on paper but closer in practice — he was here for the kickoff, here for the press-check, and the work landed first time.

Where we've worked

Birmingham, district by district.

A non-exhaustive list of Birmingham districts we've shipped projects with clients in. Numbers shown are projects shipped, not active campaigns. If your part of the city isn't listed, that's not a problem — we're 25 miles up the M6 either way.

Birmingham FAQ

The five questions Birmingham clients always ask.

If yours isn't here, drop us a note at projects@saint-nicolas.co.uk — written response inside one working day.

Do you offer in-person meetings with Birmingham clients?

Yes. Our studio is 25 miles from Birmingham city centre — a 50-minute drive on the M6, or a 35-minute train ride. We'll come to you for the kickoff and any decisive sessions (press-checks, brand reveals, launch reviews) at no additional charge.

Day-to-day work runs over video, which keeps the budget on the design and not the travel. If you'd rather meet at the studio in Nuneaton, that's an open invitation — we've got coffee, a long table, and a wall to print work onto.

Which areas of Birmingham do you cover?

All of Birmingham and the surrounding districts. Our recent work has been concentrated in the Jewellery Quarter, Digbeth, Moseley and Stirchley — but we've shipped projects with clients in Kings Heath, Harborne, Edgbaston, Bournville, Erdington, Selly Oak, Sutton Coldfield, Hall Green and Northfield too.

We also work regularly with clients in Solihull, Coventry, Warwickshire, Rugby and Leicester — all easy reach from the studio.

How quickly can you get to Birmingham for a press-check or proof sign-off?

Same-day if needed, with reasonable notice. The M6 connects the studio to Birmingham's printers and trade estates in 50 minutes off-peak; the train is faster than driving in rush hour.

We attend press-checks for print and packaging projects as standard, and proof sign-offs at suppliers in Birmingham, the Aston print cluster and the Hams Hall trade estate. If your printer's local, we probably already know it.

What kinds of Birmingham businesses do you typically work with?

Independent food and drink (roasteries, bakeries, breweries, small-plates restaurants), independent publishers and presses in the Jewellery Quarter, design-led small businesses across Digbeth, southern-arc independents in Moseley, Kings Heath and Stirchley, professional-services firms in the Colmore Row cluster, and a growing list of arts and music organisations across the city.

We work across nine design disciplines — brand, web, packaging, print, editorial and social — and most projects combine two or three. Browse the full portfolio for examples by discipline.

How do you price design projects for Birmingham clients?

Same as anywhere — every project is quoted bespoke against scope, complexity and turnaround, with a written estimate before any work starts.

No travel mark-up for Birmingham projects: we're close enough that on-site sessions don't change the brief. We don't publish day rates or package prices because every brief is genuinely different, and a fair quote needs context. Send us a brief or just a paragraph about what you're trying to do and we'll come back within one working day.
