The Green Horse by Stuart Roberts Book Cover Design
The challenge
Fiction and fantasy publishing requires a cover design that strikes a balance between striking visual intrigue and clear narrative storytelling. The objective was to design an engaging book jacket for "The Green Horse / Caballo Verde" by Stuart Roberts. The primary challenge lay in bringing the book’s surreal, titular concept to life in a way that feels organic and visually believable rather than artificial. The composition needed to blend fantastical elements with a realistic landscape, capturing the imagination of readers immediately while cleanly accommodating a bilingual title layout on retail platforms and store shelves.
Our approach
We developed a majestic, cinematic design system that pairs dramatic digital illustration with sophisticated typography.
The Visuals & Composition At the centre of the artwork, a powerful, vibrant green stallion rears up dramatically against a vast, rugged mountain valley backdrop. The lighting and skin textures of the horse were meticulously rendered to blend into the natural environment, creating a sense of mythic wonder and raw energy.
The Typography We implemented a elegant, fluid serif typeface for the main word "Green," drawing the eye with its soft curves and modern styling. The secondary English title "THE HORSE" and the Spanish subtitle "CABALLO VERDE" are balanced cleanly underneath, ensuring both linguistic audiences are addressed without cluttering the upper hierarchy.
The Layout Structure The author’s name, "Stuart Roberts," anchors the bottom left corner in a crisp, high contrast white font, allowing the sweeping landscape and central subject to command the majority of the visual space.
The outcome
The final asset delivers an enchanting, highly polished book cover that establishes a powerful presence in the fiction and fantasy market. The striking colour contrast between the emerald stallion and the earthy, cinematic landscape ensures the book stands out brilliantly as a digital thumbnail and on physical display tables. The production files were delivered as a complete print ready package with optimised colour profiles, ensuring the rich, complex green tones and scenic gradients replicate flawlessly across matte or glossy physical finishes.
