The Great Gershwin Instrumental Songbook Cd Cover Design

Album Cover Design 2015

This portfolio artwork piece highlights the commercial print layout and graphic architecture for "The Great Gershwin: Instrumental Songbook" compilation CD cover design. The objective was to design a highly sophisticated, upscale and visually timeless album cover that honours the legacy of legendary composer George Gershwin. The layout instantly communicates a polished, high class instrumental listening experience, establishing a striking product identity optimised for both physical retail distribution and digital music storefronts.

Design & Requirements Breakdown

Visual Symbolism - The design features a sharp, cropped photographic portrait of a man dressed in an elegant, tailored black suit jacket and crisp white shirt, serving as the core visual narrative. In a brilliant nod to the music itself, the traditional necktie is cleverly stylised as a vertical pattern of black and white piano keys, while the lower portion of the image subtly blends into the reflective curves of a grand piano. This evocative focal imagery seamlessly reinforces themes of classical sophistication, jazz age refinement, and a masterfully performed piano driven repertoire.

Typographic Architecture - The layout incorporates a refined, high contrast typography system anchored in the lower third quadrant to give the visual elements room to breathe. The primary artist branding "The Great" is set in a delicate white serif typeface, sitting directly above the main title "Gershwin," which is rendered in a large, elegant serif font filled with a muted metallic gold gradient. Below this, the sub-branding "INSTRUMENTAL SONGBOOK" is presented in a clean, all caps sans-serif font. This deliberate typographic alignment creates a clear, effortless information hierarchy optimised for immediate recognition on retail shelves and digital streaming thumbnails.

Premium Presentation - The promotional artwork is presented in a high fidelity physical product mock up, showcasing the front cover booklet neatly encased within a premium jewel case. The left edge features a solid black spine inlay that grounds the composition and injects a structured, timeless framing element into the presentation. This focused layout highlights the sharp print resolution, the rich golden radial gradients behind the central figure, and the clean boundary lines, offering a highly tactile preview of a completed commercial music release ready for manufacturing.

Strategic Colour Choice - A sophisticated, upscale palette of deep blacks, charcoal greys, and warm, luminous golden hues forms the primary canvas, instantly projecting an atmosphere of prestige, theater, and luxury. This smooth, radiant foundation is perfectly balanced by the clean white accents in the shirt and sub-typography, ensuring maximum readability without disrupting the artwork's refined tone. This distinct colour configuration injects an immediate sense of elite craftsmanship, balancing traditional jazz age charm with a contemporary, high end visual aesthetic.

Target Audience Focus - The structured, concept first layout is meticulously tailored to engage jazz, classical, and traditional pop enthusiasts looking for premium instrumental arrangements, collectors seeking polished physical anthology releases, and retail music consumers demanding a transparent, highly professional package design that beautifully honours a legendary American songbook.
