Old Man, Old Dog by Michael Prysock - Music Single Cover Design

Album Cover Design 2025

This portfolio piece highlights the commercial art direction and poignant, heritage focused layout architecture for Michael Prysock’s single CD release, "Old Man, Old Dog." The design objective was to build a raw, deeply emotional cover art piece that perfectly fits acoustic folk, roots Americana and storytelling country music. The layout relies on cinematic, documentary style photography to instantly establish themes of aging, companionship, and quiet devotion, optimised for a strong presence on digital streaming services and physical CD merchandise.

Design & Requirements Breakdown

Typographic Architecture - The design uses a coordinated, stylised typography layout anchored cleanly in the upper left quadrant of the composition to leave the central subjects uninterrupted. The artist’s name "MICHAEL PRYSOCK" is rendered in a sharp, geometric white serif font, maintaining a consistent brand identity across his releases. Directly underneath, the track title "OLD MAN, OLD DOG" is displayed in a bold, elongated, custom Art Deco inspired typeface, with clean white lettering that guarantees maximum readability against the darker background elements.

Premium Presentation - The promotional artwork is displayed as a high fidelity digital single preview, positioning the square cover design against an expansive, de-saturated studio vignette backdrop. The background consists of a heavily blurred close up of the historical textures and figures from the artwork. This out of focus background treatment framing the composition creates an added layer of atmosphere and depth, drawing the viewer's immediate focus to the crisp lines and boundaries of the core CD art.

Strategic Colour Choice - The colour palette relies entirely on a moody, stark monochromatic scheme of deep blacks, rich charcoals and clean whites, establishing a timeless and classic documentary feel. By eliminating colour, the focus is entirely shifted to the raw emotional expression and lighting of the scene. The choice of bright white text ensures that both the artist's name and song title remain instantly legible, cutting through the dark textures of the background even when scaled down to a small streaming thumbnail.

Target Audience Focus - The historic, narrative first layout is meticulously crafted to engage enthusiasts of traditional storytelling music, vinyl and CD collectors looking for premium aesthetic packaging and music consumers demanding an authentic, highly professional design that honours traditional American music heritages and emotional storytelling.
